“One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.”
Della had only $ 1.87 with her. Chicks, half burnt glowing and lips weathered with parsimony. She had never let any Christmas go without offering gift to her husband. She is thinking of what present could she give to her husband, Jim. She had already started saving money for that present from long time. But, expenses at home were greater than what was actually calculated.
Jim’s salary for his job of Professor was about $30 per month long back. Now, It had lowered down to only $20 per month. So, days were not much easy one. Della was standing in front of mirror pondering over her past life. She remembered that in their life, there were only two things, of which they could be proud of. One is Jim’s Gold watch which was used by his father as well as grandfather in the past. Second thing was her long, brownish hairs. Jim had always admired her hairs, rippling and shining like cascade of brown water waving down the head. He would start looking over the top of head towards the end of hairs which will take the gaze towards the garments over the knees. Her hairs were glittering like gold in the sunshine and never needed any more ornamentation.
After pondering over long time, idea clicked in her mind. Now, she could give a better gift to her husband.
She gets out of home wearing old brown jacket and one big hat covering the head. She started walking along the street leading towards the market. She stopped in front of one store called “Hair Goods of all things”. It was a store, where all things made up of hairs were sold out. She approached in front of lady in the shop and asked if she could purchase her long beautiful hairs. She agreed to take all her hairs for the price of twenty dollar. Within five minutes shop lady removed all her hairs making her bald. Della took her twenty dollars, put the hat over the bald head and came out of the shop. Now, She was free to buy anything as a gift of her husband. While walking along the jewelers shop, she finds one beautiful fob chain, which will look beautiful along with Gold watch. She utters herself, “Now, It’s Jim’s Chain”
Della returned back her home happily. Now, She was waiting for him. Any sound of steps around the house would make her peep outside the door thinking as if her husband approaching. At last, Jim stepped inside. Della finds him staring towards her, but couldn’t recognize these peculiar emotions.
She reached in front of him quickly and cried out “Jim, darling, Don’t look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold them to give you Christmas gift. I will grow all my hairs again. So, Don’t worry. My hairs grow very fast. Say ‘Merry Christmas.”
“You’ve cut off your hair?” asked Jim, laboriously, as if he had not understood what exactly happened even after the hardest mental labor.
“Cut it off and sold it,” said Della. “Don’t you like me just as well, anyhow? I’m me without my hair, Isn’t it? could ever anything count my love for you.”
She caught his hands, keeping the chain glowing in his hands and asked him. “Show me your gold Watch. I want to see how this chain looks over you.”
Jim pushed back towards the bed and sat there holding his head. He answered, “I’ve sold the watch to get the money to buy combs for your beautiful hairs.”
